If you primarily perform cataract surgeries but would like a reliable microscope for other anterior as well as posterior segment surgeries, the M822 ophthalmic surgical microscope from Leica Microsystems is a perfect fit.

Your benefits

  • Benefit from optimal visualization from cataract to glaucoma surgery, based on high-quality Leica optics and the dual direct illumination system with a combination of LED and Halogen for astounding images
  • Enjoy ergonomic support, working in an upright, relaxed posture and controlling the microscope intuitively via handle or footswitch
  • Adapt the M822 easily to anterior or poster surgeries to with a range of available accessories
  • Experience uninterrupted workflows, progressing through your procedure smoothly with preprogrammed settings

Optimal visualization

The combination of high-transmission Leica optics and dual illumination makes for brilliant images, a prerequisite for smooth surgeries.

Especially in cataract surgery, the dual illumination is very efficient. It consists of a LED main light source and Halogen coaxial Red Reflex illumination. It enables you to

  • work with a stable red reflex throughout the entire procedure, even when the patient’s eye moves
  • differentiate fine structures in the anterior chamber to ensure full removal of lens and cortical fragments
  • work at minimal light levels thanks to direct illumination, so that the procedure is less stressful for the patient
  • activate the Retina Protection function effortlessly during lens preparation via the footswitch or control panel to automatically reduce light intensity

What does direct illumination mean?

In Leica ophthalmic microscopes, such as the M822, the light source is directly in the optics carrier. In many other systems, the light source is built into the microscope stand and light is guided into the optics carrier via fiber-optic cables.

Advantages of a direct illumination system

  • Low maintenance cost: Fiber optics can lose light intensity over time, as the fibers can break due to movement. It’s fairly costly to exchange them. No fiber optics mean less money spent.
  • Low light levels: Thanks to the proximity of the light source to the operating field and the high-transmission Leica optics, surgeons can keep light levels down, but still see clearly
  • Low stress levels: Less light needed in eye surgeries directly translates to more patient and surgeon comfort. Surgeons also benefit from better patient collaboration.

I like the M822 light concept without using fiber optics for illumination. The OR staff finds it easy to handle, with very low maintenance cost. I have been using the M822 almost daily for years, without noticing any degradation of the quality of the light or the image quality.

Ergonomic Support: Work comfortably, feel better

Especially when performing several procedures in a row, ergonomics cannot be overestimated.

  • A comfortable posture allows you to fully concentrate on your patient
  • An upright posture reduces strain in your neck, shoulders, and back
  • Seamless control via footswitch and microscope handle avoid unnecessary movement and a strained posture

The M822 ophthalmic microscope is available with a large selection of binocular tubes for individual needs to increase comfort.

Uninterrupted workflow

In an OR, several aspects contribute to a smooth workflow, even before a procedure begins.

  • Set up the microscope quickly for each surgeon thanks to personalized settings for up to 30 possible profiles
  • Refocus less and save time thanks to the combination of illumination and high-transmission Leica optics which deliver great depth of field
  • Progress smoothly through surgery phases with the StepCycle function. Simply activate these programmed settings for illumination, focus, and zoom via footswitch e.g., during Capsulorhexis and Phacoemulsification

After a procedure, all microscope functions can be automatically reset by simply moving the swingarm up and away from the operating table. The microscope is directly ready for the next procedure, and your staff does not need to reset the system, which saves time.

Record and share easily in HD

The HD C 100 medical camera from Leica Microsystems allows surgeons to take images and record videos in full HD quality.

Easily display them on an external monitor to share the view with your entire OR team.

Furthermore, you can equip the M822 with the EVO 4K video recording and documentation system to use enhanced documentation features.

EVO 4K is a trademark of Med X Change, registered in the U.S. and other countries.

The M822 equipped with commonly used wide-angle observation systems or stereo image inverters, such as the OCULUS SDI 4/ BIOM 5.

Adaptable microscope for more eye surgeries

Even though cataract surgeries may be the most frequent, also other patient conditions must be cared for.

The M822 has interfaces to accept and easily mount further retinal and cataract accessories, such as:

  • Use the ToricEyePiece to help you place toric IOLs in cataract surgery
  • Use the Keratoscope, a ring illuminator, to qualitatively evaluate the corneal curvature of the eye for astigmatism
  • Use the retinal wide-angle viewing system RUV800 for an upright view of the retina
  • Use the Oculus SDI 4/ BIOM 5® system for retinal procedures
